Tuesday 9th June, Clean up and pack day – Alice Springs

Bike #890: Results are in. Sadly our first DNF in 7 tries. But, with the vintage bike it was always a high possibility - so close!

Clean up and pack day Alice Springs

Up reasonably early to do a Big Wash down in the laundry. Got in early to avoid the rush.

The park now has pay wave in some machines which is much easier than having to find coins, although I did bring a stash of coins!

While I was chatting to a fellow in the laundry he queried whether the vintage bike down the end of the campground was ours. It wasn’t and I told Roy who immediately knew it would be Craig Boston with his Dad’s 1976 bike. They had been chatting on social media. We walked down to meet him and Malcolm Axworth who had raced with Craig’s dad in the first Finke.

I put this picture of the three of them, with their story, on the Tatt’s Finke Desert Race 2026 FB site and it scored more than 2.2K reactions and many shares. Sadly it appears to have been since deleted.

Started packing up all the bike stuff and the cabin. Put the bikes on the trailer and generally got as close to being ready to go as possible. Tried to catch up on all the social media in the meantime and catch up on the website blog. Only managed to get one up- struggled with the internet and getting all the necessary files into one location amidst stopping to help with packing.

We went with Chris and Graeme to the telegraph cafe for lunch, toasted sandwiches and smoothies. Weather still warm and amazing. Not even too many flies!

We went out to the race track to pick up the residual 2-stroke fuel that wasn’t used as there was no return journey. The track was like a ghost town. Hard to believe that there had been thousands of people there the previous day. We spent the rest of the day packing, we had been there a while now with all the prep before the race, and generally catching up on stuff. There’s always much more to the packing than anticipated. Chris and Graeme went over to Woolies for a BBQ chook and salad. The boys went to the camp kitchen and cooked the chips for a lovely chicken and chips dinner.
